Pool and Spa Safety

On a hot summer’s day, nothing sounds better than taking a dip into a backyard pool. While swimming pools are more often than not a place of fun, relaxation, and recreation, they can sometimes be the setting for serious accidents and even death.

Swimming Pool Drain Hazards

In 2008 the Consumer Product and Safety Commission passed legislation which made it mandatory for all swimming pools and spas to have drain covers. This law was passed after numerous drowning accidents involving children and young adults occurred due to suction caused by drains. According to reports, uncovered drains can create so much suction that arms, legs, and hair can get caught in the drain and never be released.

Pool Injury Prevention and Liability

Although it is now required by law to install drain covers in new pools and spas, many were constructed before this legislation passed, and many owners remain unaware of the hazards. If you or someone you know has a swimming pool without drain covers, call someone to have them installed as soon as possible. Owners of pools without drain covers could be held liable for injuries or wrongful deaths that occur on their property.
