In 2004, New Jersey enacted a statute that requires all the information on a doctor to be documented. This information is very helpful in medical malpractice cases. It contains any of the doctor’s previous mistakes, errors and carelessness. Read more below on this NJ statute.
The “New Jersey Health Care Consumer Information Act” (P.L.2003, c.96) was signed into law by Governor James E. McGreevey on June 23, 2003, and became effective June 23, 2004. The statute required that profile information about New Jersey medical doctors and podiatrists be developed and maintained and that certain information be made available to the public electronically and by other means.
Below is a listing of the required information found in the profile of doctors, podiatrists and optometrists:
Required Information
- Medical school(s) or optometry school(s) attended and year degree received.
- Graduate medical education, including all internships, residencies, and fellowships (Medical Doctors/Podiatrists only).
- State Board of Optometrists Certifications.
- Year first licensed.
- Year first licensed in New Jersey.
- Location of office practice site(s).
- Malpractice payments made in the last five years, including date, dollar amount and type (judgment, settlement, arbitration).
- New Jersey disciplinary actions taken against the practitioner within the last ten years.
- Any current restrictions/limitations against the practitioner’s New Jersey license.
- Other state or licensing entity disciplinary actions within the last ten years.
- In the case of medical doctors and podiatrists, hospital and health care facility privilege revocations or restrictions within the last ten years.
- In the case of medical doctors and podiatrists, resignations or non-renewal of hospital or health care facility privileges (for reasons related to competency, misconduct or impairment) within the last ten years
- Convictions of crimes of the first through fourth degree within the last ten years.
